Local Area

Kingsbridge is a lively town which has a steep and picturesque high street. There are few chain stores, so it retains an old fashioned character, with proper bakers, greengrocers and butchers, a book shop, a toy shop and garments galore, from flip flops to chiffon frocks.

There’s a market 3 days a week at the quay, and the ladies of the WI sell their wonderful home made produce every Wednesday morning in the old town hall. The quay car park doubles up as a car boot sale most Sundays.

There are lots of things to look at and do: a sports centre with a great swimming pool, the charming Reel Cinema, children’s playgrounds and a library, a lovely museum, The Cookworthy, at the top of town, even a nightclub.… it’s easy to find out about fetes, regattas, open gardens, tide times, etc . from the information centre, or by getting a copy of the local gazette, (out every Friday.)
The South Hams, is an area of great natural beauty, rolling hills and fields, ancient woodlands, dotted about with pretty villages and hamlets. An extensive network of footpaths and country lanes allows easy access to the surrounding countryside. The South West Coast Path runs here, through mainly National Trust owned land, mile after mile of excellent walking, with stunning scenery.

There are several glorious beaches within easy reach of Kingsbridge, and for inland explorers, Dartmoor is only a 40 minute drive away. There are so many fun things to try in this part of south Devon, canoeing, horse riding, rock climbing, golf, tennis, fishing, sailing, steam trains, cream teas, farm visits, and of course, crabbing with a bucket and line in the estuary. If that all sounds rather tiring, dozing and reading in the garden is a good alternative! There are plenty of maps and guide books at Black Barn, whatever your preference. Below is a list of useful links to help you find out more about the area and its delights.
